Mulan Awards honour the achievements and successes of Chinese women in the United Kingdom.
This annual event at the Corinthia Hotel London was hosted by the Chairman, Mei Sim Lai OBE DL and the Trustees of Mulan Foundation Network.
The 2015 Mulan Awards’ winners are as follows:
Young Achiever Achievement Winner: Wendy Yu. Founder of Yu Capital, an investment company in high growth enterprises in fashion, lifestyle and technology. Board member of Mengtian Group. Youngest and only Chinese Patron on British Fashion Council’s Fashion Trust.
Contribution to Education Winner: Professor Kay-Tee Khaw CBE. Fellow of Gonville and Caius College in Cambridge. Distinguished scientist with outstanding achievements in public health in particular the study of old age. Has a national and international reputation in this field and is a sought-after academic speaker. Senior member of the Department of Health and Primary Care in the Clinical School of Medicine at University of Cambridge.
Contribution to Arts & Culture Winner: Ching-He Huang. Successful and well-known British Chinese food writer and TV Chef and food entrepreneur. Author of 6 best – selling cook books. Face of Chinese cooking internationally through her TV shows, books and tableware.
Contribution to Arts & Culture Commendation: Jiaxin Lloyd Webber. Described as one of the most successful cellists the world. Involved at the very highest level of music making in this country and has toured with well-known orchestras and recorded for Universal Classics and Naxos.
Contribution to Science & Technology Winner: Avril Jiao. Senior Scientist at GlaxoSmithKline with 5 R&D recognition awards. In 2014 won GSK Exceptional science award on innovative method developed for Biocatalyst selection. Current Project Manager at GSK China involved with China medicines development.
Contribution to Science & Technology Commendation: Kanwal Bhatia. Postdoctoral researcher specialising in computer vision, machine learning and image/video processing at Imperial College. Visiting Researcher at the Vision and Machine Learning Laboratory at National University of Singapore. Achievements include the Network on Computational Statistics and Machine Learning PDRA in 2014.
Contribution to Business & Enterprise Winner: Eileen Burbidge MBE. Chairman of Tech City UK and FinTech Special Envoy for HM Treasury. Partner in Passion Capital, the leading early stage technology venture capital investment in Europe, based in London. Sits on several boards of companies in which Passion capital has invested. Extensive operational experience gained at Yahoo, Skype, Apple and elsewhere. Member of the Prime Minister’s Business Advisory Group.
Contribution to Business & Enterprise Commendation: Siqi Faissat. Founder and Managing Director of Celestial Globe Consultancy. Greatly experienced in analysing the UK property market and a powerful leader in the UK property investment advisory sector. In 2013 set up Sino-UK Real Estate Investment Association to enhance communication between specialists of UK property investment and investors.
Contribution to Charitable Causes and Philanthropy Winner: Juanita Yau. Chairperson of the Wai Yin Society since it was set up in 1989. It provides services in education, family support, mental health, welfare advice and social care to the Chinese Community and BME Community Groups. Has played a central and key role in leading the organisation, developing it and overseeing its monumental growth over the years.
Contribution to Charitable Causes and Philanthropy Commendation: Sheela Mackintosh-Stewart. A specialist in divorce and family law with her own practice, Sheela been nominated for her work in helping to set up and lead the Diaspora Emerging Leadership Programme that has mentored and incubated over 50 top graduates from British Chinese backgrounds over the last 3 years. Positions she holds and has held include being Vice Chairman of London British Red Cross, Adviser on the All Party Parliamentary Group on Life transitions and Board member of the Conservative Friends of the Chinese.
Contribution to Public Service and Community Winner: Wendy Choi. Achievements include being Head of Overseas Chinese Association School, Birmingham and President of the Birmingham Women’s Association. Spent many years in working to strengthen the Chinese Community in Birmingham and helping both the Chinese elderly and the young through various initiatives and also helping on the education side.
Outstanding Contribution at the International Level Winner: Sein Chew. First ever Chinese President of IWF, the global organisation with over 6,000 women leaders as members. Outstanding global career as Founder, President and CEO of Unity Asset Management of Hong Kong and New York. Listed as one of the Top 50 Asians in business in the USA. Named as one of Hong Kong’s Most Inspirational and In Women. Recipient of the All China Women’s Federation friendship award and helped to build an important bridge between IWF and the Federation.
